Vocabulary Words: (Write words on the board and discuss with class)

Ascension- the rising of Jesus Christ from earth to heaven after Resurrection
Resurrection- the bodily raising of Jesus Christ from the dead on the third day after he died on the cross
Baptize- when you are baptized it frees us from original sin and gives us new life in Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit- the third Person of the Trinity who comes to us in Baptism and fills us with God’s life

Plan:

Introduction: We celebrate Jesus going to heaven on Ascension Thursday (write it on the board). Ascension is the rising of Jesus Christ from earth to heaven after Resurrection. This day comes 40 days after Easter. On Ascension Thursday we pray, sing, and rejoice with Jesus and all the angels and saints. We call it a holy day and celebrate it be participating in Mass. The gospel reading for that day is about the Ascension of Jesus.

The Catholic Toolbox- Birth of Jesus to Ascension Cards
Play Memory, Go Fish, or Sequencing with these cards. The cards can also help students establish the content and order of the Matthew, Mark and Luke (synoptic) gospels. Example: Take the gospel of Mark since it's the shortest and ask the students to take the cards and put them in the order which Mark mentions them in his book.

Play the game “Telephone” (use an empty cardboard paper towel roll). Start with today’s memory verse, then let the kids think of other Scriptures to pass around the circle. Talk about how we can share God’s Word with others.

Case of the Missing Person (Jesus Returns to Heaven)- In this game, kids will try to figure out who’s missing from the class. They’ll get an idea of how some people must have felt after Jesus returned to heaven. (The Encyclopedia of Bible Games for Children’s Ministry by Group Publishing, page 104.)

Life of Christ Board Game- Collect tokens by moving around the game board and answering questions about the life of Christ. The player with the most tokens at the end of the game, wins.

Gardenia-
I hope your family has fun with the activities. The snacks do sound yummy and I think the children will really understand the concept of ascension. :)
